Chard has embraced the idea of closer links with our partners in Europe and has long standing twinning associations with Helmstedt in Germany, Morangis in France and Seica Mare in Romania.
Helmstedt, Germany
Chard has been officially twinned with Helmstedt in Lower Saxony, Northern Germany since 1980. The Twinning Association aims to promote good and lasting relationships between citizens of the towns.
The Helmstedt Society aim to promote and foster understanding and friendship between the people and towns of Chard and Helmstedt, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Cultural, social, educational and similar activities are organised by the society.
The two towns were formally linked in 1980, but unofficial links go back to the early 1950s.
If you join the Helmstedt Society, you will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about a different culture and lifestyle and share experiences, perhaps creating lifetime friendships, as some members have done;
- Have guests from Helmstedt stay with you;
- Travel to Helmstedt, stay with a German family and visit interesting places and towns; and
- Be part of a social group which during the year enjoys quizzes, coffee mornings and other social and fundraising events.
People of all ages and interests can join. Membership is just £5 per year.

Morangis, France
Morangis, Chard’s French twinned town is located not too far from Paris in the Essone region. Links between the two towns date back to 1983 but the decision to formally link the two towns through twinning did not happen until 1993.
Seica Mare, Romainia
More recently, in September 2008 Chard signed the official charter that would see the town twinned with Seica Mare in Romania.
