Mayor’s Blog – Week Ending 4th January 2015

Posted on 6th January 2015

After spending Christmas with my family it’s nice to have time to take a look at the visits we made during December to various groups in Chard.
We visited 6 nursing homes, including Chard Hospital, 3 sheltered accommodation centres, attended 5 carol services, 3 Christmas parties and eaten 3 Christmas dinners. We also had invitations from various people including the opening of Raglan Housing Association’s new development at Great Western Road. It would be hard for me to pick an event in particular to talk about without leaving so many out or writing a whole page, but it has been so good to meet lots of people and speak to them about what the festive season means to them. We all have different traditions and customs, (one of mine is that Christmas doesn’t begin until we have been to sleep). The thing that strikes me most is at Christmas we can find time to visit each other and spend time with those we love. In this busy world that we now live in it is nice to stop, even if it is just for one day, look around and realise how lucky we are to have our friends and family.
As the weather gets colder and more difficult for us all to get around you might find time to visit an elderly neighbour to make sure they are OK and don’t need any shopping or just enjoy a cup of tea and a chat. Winter means the nights draw in earlier and the doors are shut for longer, when we are enjoying our families maybe spare a thought for those who don’t have anyone …. there are more people than you think who are lonely!
I wish you all a very Happy New Year and look forward to meeting you soon.
