Mayor’s Blog – Week Ending 1st December 2013

Posted on 6th December 2013

What an incredible week we have had this last seven days!

Monday evening was the “Declaration of Good Ale” event with Chard’s very own Town Crier Stuart Cummings. We met at the Cerdic at 7.30pm and with several other Council Members and friends we proceeded to walk around the town hostelries so that Stuart could taste their ale and declare it “fit for the people of Chard”. We managed seven Pubs on the night and had to visit the Bell and Crown on Friday night because we ran out of time. Everyone was very welcoming and we collected £120 for the Mayor’s charities on the night.

On Friday 29th it was Chard’s Christmas Light switch on. At 6pm 55 Santas ran, walked or crawled around the block of the Guildhall/Holyrood street. There were tiny tots and over 80s taking part. It was great fun and we raised over £1000 in sponsorship monies. At 7.15pm the real Santa arrived and we switched on the lights together.

Stuart, Mark Hambrey -the Mace Bearer and I joined in the Gangnam style demonstration by 1610 Leisure outside the Guildhall before giving out the prizes for the Co-op’s Christmas Colouring Competition.

It was a great night and organised by just a few volunteers. We will definitely need more people to help next year so if you think you could spare a few hours to help with putting up the Xmas lights or organising next year’s switch on evening please contact either Garry Shortland or myself via the town Council.

On Saturday 30th the Guildhall was transported back to the 1920s for a Murder Mystery evening – Madame Zig Zig’s speakeasy. The music was hot and the gin was flowing and a dastardly deed was done. The guests had to guess who the murderer was. Again this was a first for us to organise and I would like to thank everybody who was involved. We raised over £1500 for my charities and learned a lot for next time.
