Mayors Blog – Week Ending 28th July 2013

Posted on 29th July 2013

Mon 22nd July – This morning I was given the privilege of opening Ferne Animal Sanctuary’s new shop in Chard. It was a very hot day and unfortunately the helium balloons were bursting in the heat. This shop is bigger than their previous one and has more storage space behind the scenes to help the volunteers to sort and store. I was lucky enough to have opened their previous shop as Deputy Mayor, they also have shops in Taunton and Bridport to help raise funds for the sanctuary.

Wed 23rd July – My Consort – Andy, myself and our grandson went to the medieval day at Ferne Animal Sanctuary and what a lovely day it was with lots of families there, some with their dogs. I judged the fancy dress competition which is always difficult because all the children are so hopeful. We were shown around the kennels which are due to be replaced soon as they are quite old and the new kennels will allow the sanctuary to home more dogs.

Sun 28th July – We travelled to Bridgwater for the Mayor’s Civic Service followed by a lovely cream tea. The Mayor’s chosen charity for this year is the Beacon Centre (which is also one of mine). It was an opportunity to met with one of their staff who explained how the charity money is used to provide services such as a family room (to allow relatives to stay the night), Kindles and ipads for the patients who have to stay all day in treatment rooms and simple things like flowers for the wards. He explained that even small amounts make a big difference to the care they can give.
