Mayors Blog – Week Ending 26th January 2014

Posted on 27th January 2014

After a very busy December, January has proven to be very quiet for me as Mayor, I have even had time to do the housework!!

My first engagement since Christmas was on Saturday 25th when Andy and I were invited by Cllr Mrs. Brennie Halse and her husband Rob to the Burns Night at St Mary’s Church in Chard. This event was held by the Church to help to raise the much needed funds to repair the leaking roof.

The Church looked fantastic with the chairs rearranged into dining areas and individually decorated by the hosts, a large area in the middle of the church was left free so that we could dance the ‘Gay Gordon’ later on in the evening. Our haggis was piped in and addressed correctly before being served to us on a silver plate. The meal was completed by a beef dish and trifle each individually made by the table’s host.

There then followed an auction of promises where local people had pledged various goods or services free to raise cash for the roof, the offerings ranged from a fruitcake a month for six months to a trip round the Houses of Parliament. The evening was fantastic and one of the memories I shall keep with me forever after my mayorship has finished, well done every one who was involved.

Burns Night.
