Mayor’s blog week ending 25th August 2013

On Tuesday 20th August, I went with Cresswell my chaplain and his wife Barbara to visit Win Chubb at Horton cross nursing home, (Win, who is now 95 was Mayor of Chard from 1987 – 1989 ) We chatted for an hour about Wins time as Mayor and how she raised money for her charities, she told me that she had a conga around the town to raise money for children in need as well as balls etc. It was interesting as Win said she was the first lady Mayor that was born in Chard; we thought that I might be the second.

On Sunday 25th August, I visited Ilminster to have tea with the Mayor at her “party in the park”, There were lots of local groups raising money for their funds as well as live music and tug of war. We were there in time to see the final of both the adults and children’s tug of war which was very competitive. Emma the Mayor told us that they had to have a special rope for both adults and children to take part in tug of war; did you know that this sport was in the Olympics from 1900 – 1920?
