Mayor’s Blog – Week Ending 22nd September 2013

Posted on 23rd September 2013

On Saturday 21st September Andy and I were present to watch Chard Concert Brass give a free concert to celebrate one of their members, John Cane, having been with the band for 60 years. The band was fantastic as usual with solos by husband and wife team Jasmine and Duncan Pavey plus a 4 generation recital by John’s family. One of the highlights of the evening was at the beginning of the second half where the children’s section played for us lovely tunes such as the theme from popular children’s shows such as Bob the Builder and Wallace and Grommet. The band played many traditional tunes as well as a selection of James Bond themes and “in the summertime”, by Mungo Jerry, the compère was very amusing and the Guildhall was full. A great show!

On Sunday 22nd September we travelled to North Petherton to the Mayor’s civic service. Part of the service was given over to the presentation of service community awards like those given by Chard Town Council, which are made at the end of each year to local people.   In 1693 a filigree gold object was found in North Petherton with the inscription “Alfred had me made” on it, it is referred to as The Alfred Jewel and believed to date back to King Alfred the Great.  A replica of the jewel can be found in the church of St Mary where the service was held and the community awards are called the Alfred Jewel awards.
