Mayor’s Blog Week Ending 15th June 2014

Posted on 19th June 2014

It’s been a busy week for us, and plenty of food involved in my engagements! On Monday 9th June I was invited to the Annual Interclub Lunch of Chard’s Inner Wheel, this ladies group is associated with the Rotary Club and promotes friendship and community help. The lunch was held at the lovely setting of Hornsbury Mill and I spoke to the members about being Mayor and the history that surrounds it.

On Wednesday I visited the Memory Café at the Catholic Church Hall. It was their 5th anniversary and we had a quiz about what was happening when they launched (the death of Michael Jackson was just one event) and cut a celebration cake. This group is organised by the Alzheimer’s Society and would not be possible without the many volunteers in Chard. I was surprised that some of the volunteers had been with the group since it founded and they all received cards to thank them for their service.

On Thursday I attended the Lords Larder Lunch at St Mary’s Church, this was offered to local people free of charge and was a home cooked three course meal prepared and staffed by volunteers yet again. In the afternoon I celebrated Carers’ Week with the Chard Carers Support Group where I took part in some “flexercise”, this is exercise that doesn’t involve you getting off your chair – already a winner for me. Later that evening I attended the Carnival Committee meeting to hear about their plans for this year’s carnival, only a few months away now I am looking forward to it already.

On Saturday Andy and I were invited to help Combe St Nicholas Parish Council Chairman Gerry Sayers cut the ribbon at the opening of the Haymaker in Wadeford under the new ownership of Reg and Michelle, more lovely food and drink…. more flexercise I think!
