Mayor’s Blog – Week Ending 14th December 2014

Posted on 16th December 2014

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for us all and for Andy and I fundraising has taken a big part of our time. When I began this year I pledged to raise £10,000 for my five charities;

Chard Museum, Chard Carers’ Support Group, Chard and Crewkerne After Stroke Group, Chard Town Team and Chard Area Youth Committee

We have had four fund raising events during the last two weeks, it began with the primary schools Carol Concert, children from Manor Court, Redstart and Chard School all came together to give us a delightful beginning of the festive season with carols, songs and music in the Guildhall. We had over 90 children and teachers all performing.

We followed this up with my two “Turkey and Tinsel” evenings with a Christmas dinner and production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat provided by CATS, The Phoenix Hotel, Andy (the Mayor’s Wallet) and CPM Stage Management free of charge. This event proved to be more popular than we had originally thought and we sold all the tickets before they went on general sale, here’s hoping everyone enjoyed the entertainment and meal.

On Monday 8th Andy, myself and a few other brave friends accompanied our very own Stuart Cummings (Chard’s Town Crier) around the drinking establishments of Chard to test the ale for the people of the town.  This is an old tradition which the town crier was responsible for (according to Stuart). We visited all 8 establishments in the town and each one was declared fit for the people of Chard and presented with a sprig of greenery to hang above the door so that wayfarers may know that they do indeed sell a good pint of beer. It’s a tough job… but somebody has to do it!

All of these events have been made possible by everyone pulling together to make a difference to our town and in May when I hand over the cash to our five recipients I will know that it has been possible because of the hard work of so many people, not just me.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.
