Mayors Blog – Week Ending 13th April 2014

Posted on 17th April 2014

On Friday 11th Andy and I attended the broadcast of Radio 4’s “Any Questions” from St Mary’s Church in Chard. The Church was full to the brim with local people who wanted to put their questions to the Panel. It was very interesting to watch the programme being broadcast live from Chard and as an audience we were very well behaved I thought. Mark Hambrey our Mace Bearer and Linda Vejah one of the local County Councillors both had a question answered by the Panel. We had tea and cake afterwards with the panel members and local volunteers which is always a pleasure but not very good for the waistline!

On Saturday night I had the pleasure of walking Chard’s streets with the Street Pastors. This group of volunteers patrol the town centre and a few other areas talking to people and administering help if needed on a Saturday night in Chard between 10pm and 2am. I was amazed at the reception they got from the young people in the town, always respectful and grateful for their help.

While we were out we spoke to a lady who thanked them for helping her daughter last summer when she had been drunk, I thought it was a tribute to the work these guys do in all weather and how nice it was to hear some feedback from users of their service. Tea and cake again I am afraid, I think I will have to start walking a bit more.
