Chard Town Council took over the sole responsibility for the Cemetery on 1 April 1992. Previously it had run jointly with Tatworth and Forton Cemetery. Since that time we have continued to maintain Chard Cemetery to the highest standard ensuring that the area is kept clean and tidy and the grass regularly mown. Our aim it to provide a peaceful atmosphere, where visitors may find comfort and consolation.
The opening hours of the Cemetery grounds are as follows:
1st April to 30st September 8.30am - 8pm * 1st October to 31st March 9am - 4.30pm
CHARD CEMETERY CHAPEL
The Chapel in use today is one of two built at the Cemetery in the 1850's. it is open to the public Monday- Thursday 9.00am to 4.30pm and Fridays 9.00am to 12.30pm for private meditation and to view the Book of Remembrance. The chapel holds 35 people and may be used for funeral or memorial services.
BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE
The Book of Remembrance is situated in the Cemetery Chapel and provides a lasting form of memorial to loved ones buried in Chard Cemetery, or you may wish to remember a loved one interred elsewhere. The pages are regularly turned by Chard Town Council staff to show the relevant inscriptions and can be viewed by visitors during Chapel opening hours. Lettering is done by a skilled local craftsperson. An entry consists of up to three lines of text and an appropriate decorative symbol.
